New research from UC Berkeley found that current AI systems struggle to pick out important images when dealing with large collections of them. To test this, they created a benchmark called "Visual Haystacks" (VHS), which challenges AI models with tasks like finding specific images within thousands of others. The study revealed that these models often get confused by irrelevant images, especially when there's only one or a few important ones hidden among many.
To address these issues, the Berkeley team developed a new system called MIRAGE, which helps AI process multiple images more effectively by compressing the image data and improving the way the AI searches for relevant images.
